Mr. Music’s Rent-To-Own Program
Nearly all of Mr. Music’s student band and orchestra instrument inventory is available to school students via our rent to own program.
What is Rent to Own?
Rent to own is a rental plan in which a monthly rental fee is charged for the use of an instrument with all, or a portion, of the payment going towards the purchase of the instrument. These programs are popular with parents in that the instrument can be returned if the student decides not to play in the band anymore.

Avoid Hidden Rental Fees and Save with Mr. Music
What you don’t know can hurt you in the pocketbook. There are many different styles of rent to own plans and some can be a tad confusing, which makes it easy to add in extra hidden fees that can cost you big! Mr. Music contends that our customers should be comfortable with the agreement they sign and that comfort is gained via knowledge. Below is some terminology used in contracts and a few tips to help you make a sound financial decision.
MSRP (Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price)
MSRP is the price the manufacturer says the product should sell for. If you are being offered a new instrument, it is imperative that you know what the MSRP is for that instrument.
Tip: If you don’t know an MSRP, ask to see current manufacturers literature that shows the MSRP. Watch out! We’ve seen some competitors claim that they charge no interest but then price their new instruments above MSRP!
Initial or Introductory Rental Period
This is a period of time (usually between 1 and 3 months in length) in which you can rent the instrument for a reduced fee to find out if band is what the student wants to do. This time frame is then followed up with the actual rent to own part of the contract.
Tip: Does the fee paid for the trial rental period apply to the price of the instrument?
Interest
Just like a bank finances cars and homes and charging interest on the loan, your music store is financing your purchase. There isn’t anything wrong with charging interest on a loan. But you need to know, is your store is charging interest? If so, how much? Some stores claim to not charge interest, but they inflate the MSRP price. (see MSRP section above)
Early Pay-Off Discounts
The quicker a store can receive payment for an instrument the better it is for them. An early pay-off discount is a reduction in the price of the instrument, and is used as an incentive for you to pay your instrument off, rather than dragging out the contract by making all the monthly payments.
Tip: Is the “initial rental period” fee included as a payment toward the total payoff?
Hopefully this information is of a help to you. If we see anything else going out there, we will update this section so you will know what to look for.
